WHITTIER, CA. (MAR. 8, 2026)- Whittier College baseball struck early and stayed in control Tuesday afternoon, using a great offensive start and strong work on the mound to defeat Curry College 12–2 at Mendez Stadium. The Poets scored in four different innings and limited Curry to just two runs on eight hits in the seven-inning victory.
Whittier wasted no time taking command in the first.Eric Logsdon (Apple Valley, Calif., Victor Valley College) opened the bottom of the inning with a bunt single, Alex Jasso (South Gate, Calif., MACES) followed with a hit of his own, and Joe Plaskett (Fremont, Calif., Washington) quickly put the Poets in front with a three-run home run to left field. The early blast gave Whittier a 3–0 lead and set the tone for the afternoon.
The Poets added on in the second with another three-run inning. After Jay Schulze (Huntington Beach, Calif., Huntington Beach) and Mecate helped create traffic, Jasso ripped a two-run triple to right field, and Plaskett followed with an RBI single to stretch the lead to 6–0.
Curry got one run back in the third, but Whittier answered again in the fourth when Jasso delivered another two-run triple, and Plaskett drove him in with a ground-rule double down the left-field line, extending the advantage to 9–1.
Whittier put the game away in the seventh. Warren Canciller (Corona, Calif., Santiago) and Aidan Cardoza (Riverside, Calif., San Bernardino Valley College) helped spark the inning before Schulze lifted a sacrifice fly. Then Aidan Cardoza (Riverside, Calif., John W. North) stepped to the plate as a pinch-hitter and added an RBI single, that turned into two runs when Curry misplayed the ball in left. That late push gave the Poets their 12th run of the day and capped another complete offensive performance.
Plaskett led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI. Jasso finished 3-for-4 with two triples and four RBI, while Logsdon scored twice and added two hits. Schulze crossed the plate twice and drove in a run, and Whittier totaled 12 hits in all.
On the mound, Diego Castillo (Fontana, Calif., San Bernardino Valley College) earned the win with four strong innings of relief, allowing just one run while striking out six. After Johnathon Lewis (Long Beach, Calif., Millikan) worked the opening 3 innings, Castillo helped quiet Curry's lineup and allowed the Poets to keep control the rest of the way.
Whittier improved to 5–11 with the win and carried over the offensive momentum from the previous game with another productive showing at Mendez Stadium. They will now return to SCIAC play this weekend for a series against the Chapman Panthers. The first game on Friday will be hosted by Chapman at Hart Park in Orange, with a first pitch scheduled for 3:00 PM.
