WHITTIER, Calif. – Following Whittier's impressive 56-20 win over the CETYS Universidad Zorros, the Poets swept all three SCIAC Athlete of the Week awards. Running back Ashton Keyes was named Offensive Athlete of the Week, linebacker Jordan Barber earned Defensive Athlete of the Week and Preston Yado was named Special Teams Athlete of the Week.
Keyes was seemingly unstoppable, rushing for 182 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries while averaging 26 yards per attempt. Both of Keyes' scores came on runs of more than 65 yards, including a 76-yard touchdown run. His performance played a major role in Whittier's 56-point offensive showing.
On the other side of the ball, Barber led the team with nine tackles, including four solo stops. In pass coverage, the freshman also broke up two passes as he helped the Poets limit the Zorros' offense. Barber has been a steady presence in the middle of Whittier's defense to begin the season.
Yado was perfect on extra points, converting all eight of his attempts while also helping Whittier control field position on kickoffs. He averaged 60.6 yards per kickoff and recorded two touchbacks, helping put the Poets' defense in favorable situations throughout the night.
Whittier will hit the road to take on the Azusa Pacific Cougars tomorrow night, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. in its first SCIAC game of the season and SCIAC Game of the Week.
