Rogers Kills It, Earns SCIAC Offensive Athlete of the Week

WHITTIER, Calif. – Whittier’s Opposite Mia Rogers was recognized as the SCIAC Women’s Volleyball Offensive Athlete of the Week. In two matches against the La Verne Leopards and Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens, Rogers totaled 20 kills and a .434 hitting percentage. The senior from Irvine, California, also tallied six digs and two blocks. Rogers was a major factor in the Poets’ two wins, as they defeated La Verne 3-1 and swept Pomona-Pitzer. Last Wednesday against the Leopards, Rogers played in all four sets and posted 10 kills, a .368 hitting percentage, four digs and a block. In the first set, she played a big role down the stretch with a block assist that tied the game at 16 apiece. She also had a kill that kept Whittier within striking distance, trailing 18-17. Back-to-back kills from Rogers in the final set gave the Poets a 23-14 lead, ultimately leading to a 25-15 set win to close out the match. Rogers was not done there, as her best match came against Pomona-Pitzer. 10 more kills, a .500 hitting percentage, two digs and a block were her final totals. In a tight 25-23 second set, Whittier’s opposite delivered the winning kill, giving the Poets a 2-0 match advantage. With three consecutive kills at a crucial point in the third set, Rogers helped the Poets complete the sweep. She scored three of Whittier’s last six points. Rogers and her teammates will head to Azusa Pacific to face off against the Cougars on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m. Catch all the action on FloCollege.
