Lucas Govan returns to Whittier College for his second tenure with the Poets, now serving as the Offensive Coordinator.

Most recently, in 2024, Govan was part of the coaching staff at the University of San Diego, where he coached Tight Ends and Tackles. During his time at USD, he coached three All-Conference players and coordinated the team’s Goal Line and short-yardage packages. Under his leadership, the Toreros ranked 4th nationally in FCS for run blocking and finished in the top 10 for pass efficiency, according to Pro Football Focus.

In 2023, Govan served as Director of Player Personnel at UC Davis, where he led the program’s recruiting efforts. His work helped secure the highest-rated recruiting class in school history.

Govan’s previous experience at the University of San Diego includes roles as Assistant Offensive Line Coach in 2022 and Tight Ends/Fullbacks Coach during the spring of 2023.

Before USD, Govan spent time at Whittier College as the Run Game Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach. During his first stint with the Poets, he coached two All-Conference linemen, one of whom went on to play professionally for the Helsinki Wolverines in Finland.

In Spring 2021, he served as the Quarterbacks and Special Teams Coach at Feather River College. That season, his special teams unit led the conference in Punt Return Average, Kick Return Average, and PAT percentage, while three of his quarterbacks earned opportunities at four-year programs.

Govan began his coaching career in 2017 as an Offensive Line Graduate Assistant at Humboldt State University, his alma mater. That season, he worked with three All-Conference players, including eventual NFL third-round draft pick Alex Cappa (Tampa Bay Buccaneers). In 2018, he was promoted to Offensive Line Coach and continued his success, mentoring two more All-Conference linemen.

A native of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, Govan was a standout athlete at Carmel High School, earning All-League, All-County, and All-State honors. He continued his playing career at Humboldt State, where he was a two-time All-American, multiple-time All-Region and All-Conference selection, and a member of the 2015 GNAC Championship team.

Govan holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology (2017) and a Master of Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Adapted Physical Education (2019), both from Humboldt State University.
