WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Basketball team ended their two-game losing skid Friday afternoon rolling past Rhodes College 94-56 to jumpstart the Holiday Inn La Mirada Purple & Gold Poet Classic.

Whittier moves to 1-2 on the young season and is currently averaging 89.3 points per game, while shooting 50% as a team from the field and 40% from three-point territory.

Thirteen players saw the court for the Purple & Gold with Kenyatta Louder (Compton, Calif.) and Nick Colosi (La Mirada, Calif.) leading the offense with 13 points each.  Louder also added 13 boards and Colosi came off the bench playing just ten minutes but was 5-for-8 from the field.

Ahmad Young (Sunnyvale, Calif.) added 12 points and eight rebounds and Kyle Price (Rocklin, Calif.) in his first game back was a perfect 4-for-4 for nine points along with five rebounds.

Journey Shank (Burbank, Calif.) ran the point and provided eight points going 2-for-4 from the field along with four boards and three assists.  Nick Potthoff (Phoenix, AZ) also added eight points with six rebounds and a pair of assists and Jacob Aruta (Stockton, Calif.) came off the bench playing 20 minutes adding seven points and eight rebounds.

Whittier shot a season high 52% from the field and 39% from three-point territory.  They hauled in a season high 63 rebounds and won the battle in the paint 38-18.  They forced 14 Lynx turnovers and added 17 points off of them and held a lead as large as 42 with two minutes to play in the game.

The Poets opened up the game with an impressive 12-0 run behind two triples from Potthoff and Young, two free throws from Shank and a pair of layins from Louder and Young.  The Lynx finally got on the scoreboard at the 15:41 mark but again saw WC put together another nine unanswered that opened the score up to 23-7.  Rhodes attempted a comeback late in the half with a 6-4 spurt but over the final minute Whittier added six straight with Conner Longmire (Tarzana, Calif.) completing a three point play the old fashion way and Shank converting from downtown.

The Lynx got back to back three-pointers to start the second half and then put together eight unanswered minutes later to cut the deficit to 22  but that's as close as they would get as Whittier would counter with a 16-2 run that secured the win.

Whittier wraps up the 2018 Holiday Inn La Mirada Purple & Gold Poet Classic tomorrow, Saturday, November 24 as they take on the University of Puget Sound at 3:00pm.
