Men’s Golf Opens 2018-19 at CA State Intercollegiate

VENTURA, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Golf team jump started their 2018-19 season earlier this week at the CA State Intercollegiate finishing 10th with a two day score of 602.

The tournament was hosted by Cal Lutheran at Olivas Links Golf Club featuring 12 teams and 64 individuals. The par for the course was 72. The teams played 18 holes each day.

The Purple & Gold who boasts the youngest squad within the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) brought in seven new additions this year, including a transfer and six freshmen.  For the tournament, first year Head Coach Doo Kang brought a young lineup, which included a junior, sophomore and three freshmen.

Whittier posted a 304 on Day 1 but was able to get their footing after that putting up a 298 to wrap up the two-day event.  They ended up beating No. 81 Occidental College (609) and Providence Christian (621).  They were also close to upsetting No. 58 Pomona-Pitzer (9th - 596) and Biola University (8th - 595).

Junior transfer Vincent Brunet (Orleans, Canada) led the Poets finishing 16thoverall.  He posted a 76 on Day 1 before improving six shots with a 70.  He was +2 for the tournament.  Freshman Roman Aragon (La Palma, Calif.) wasn't far behind placing 17th with a consistent 73-74 over the two-days.  He was +3.

Salvador Hinojosa (Downey, Calif.) finished in a tie for 47th.  He too was consistent shooting two rounds at 76.  He was +8 for the tournament.  Sophomore Martin Bedino (Neuquen, Argentina) who saw limited time on course last year found his way into the 70's posting rounds of 79-78, which was good enough for 56th (+13).

The final Poet to score was freshman Justin McGrath (Cardiff by the Sea, Calif.) who went 82-82 finishing 61st.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps walked away with the title and finished with 13-under-par (277-286-563). The University of Texas at Tyler was the runner-up with 1-over-par (289-288-577).

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Austin Long won individualist honors as he finished at 8-under-par (68-68-136). George Fox's Mason Koch was the runner-up with 6-under-par (68-70-138). CMS golfer Ken Kong (68-72-140) and Chapman's Brody Hval (73-67-140) tied Cal Lutheran's Ryan Kyaw at 4-under-par.
