WHITTIER, Calif. – This past week, the Purple & Gold sent off their senior class, which included Anders Blomso (Shoreline, WA), Colin Fellezs (Mililani, HI), Robert Kaaret (Highland Park, IL), Aidan Tol (Tustin, Calif.), Trevor Tuma (Vashon Island, WA), Leimana Hassett (Lahaina, HI), Kayanna Heffner (Bend, OR), Maddie McMurray (Phnom Penh, Cambodia), and Erika Ngo (Alhambra, Calif.).
In the 3-Meter, diver Chris Pudlinski (Cromwell, CT) would score points for the Poets with a score of 145.90 in his only event of the day.
The 200 Medley relay team of Michael Laws (Anacortes, WA), Quinn LaCoursiere (Delray Beach, FL), Fellezs, and Tol would get the swimming started with a quick finish ahead of both Oxy teams at a 1:39.65. LaCoursiere, Fellezs, and Laws would follow their strong performance in the relay with a 1-2-4 finish in the 100 IM, 54.78, 55.08, and 56.28, respectively.
LaCoursiere would come back to win the 100 Breast, out touching Oxy by .06 at a 1:00.38 and earn 3rd in the 100 Fly (55.57). In the 200 Fly, Fellezs would take 2nd with a 2:01.34 and later 4th in the 200 Back with First-Year Devin Gaude (Lakewood, Calif.) to finish after in 5th at 2:14.18. Rounding out the stroke events, Senior Robert Kaaret would touch for 4th in the 200 Breast (2:32.32) followed by First-Year Adonnis Rivera (Lynwood, Calif.) swimming a 2:41.16.
In the Freestyle events, Tol would finish 5th in the 200 Free at a 1:51.80 and later return to finish 3rd in both the 50 (22.44) and 100 (50.65). Sophomore Will Arnsparger (Long Beach, Calif.) would come in 4th for the 500 at a 5:07.49 and 3rd in the 200 IM.
To wrap up senior day, the 200 Freestyle Relay "A" team of Gianluca Bencomo (San Jose, Calif.), Ansparger, Gaude, and Toby Chung (La Canada, Calif.) would touch for 2nd at a 1:35.63 and the "B" team of Seniors Blomso, Kaaret, and Tuma, along with Rivera would earn 3rd.
Junior, Becca Ayers (La Habra, Calif.) got the Poets off to a strong start with top finishes in both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter scoring 260.60 and 266.60, respectively.
The 200 Medley relay team of Brooke Geske (San Pedro, Calif.), Alexa Melara (Rialto, Calif.), Esther Choe (Mercer Island, WA), and Brenda Shanahan (San Ramon, Calif.) would get the swimming started with a quick finish ahead of both Oxy teams at a 1:51.76. Swimming back to back events, Choe and Shanahan would follow up that performance by going 1-2 in the 100 IM, only 0.02 seconds from each other with a 1:02.43 and 1:02.45. Senior Maddie McMurray would also score some points in the event by placing 4th.
Geske would keep up the momentum from the relay in her individual events by placing first in the 200 Free (1:57.68) and the 100 Back (59.86). Sophomore Allie Novak (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and First-Year Lexi Mauldin (Modesto, Calif.) would also earn 3rd and 4th in the 200 by going 2:06.12 and 2:07.37, respectively. Shanahan would join Geske in the top rankings of the 100 Back by placing 3rd overall at a 1:03.02.
In a close finish, Senior Erika Ngo would earn 2nd in the 100 Breast at a 1:10.77, getting out touched by .07 at the wall. Choe would wrap up her events of the day with a 4th place finish in both the 100 Breast and 50 Free. Along with Choe, Shanahan would finish off her individual races by placing 2nd in the 50 at a 25.42.
Heading into 200's of stroke, Geske would take 2nd in Backstroke at a 2:14.99 to finish up her meet and earn the Poets some more points. Melara would later place first in Breaststroke with a 2:28.34, followed by Senior Ky Heffner in 3rd at a 2:38.87.
In the last individual events of the meet, Novak and Melara would go 2-3 in the 500 Free at 5:37.32 and 5:44.74, along with Heffner and McMurrary going 3-4 in the 200 IM. To wrap up the senior meet, the 200 Free Relay of Mauldin, Heffner, McMurray, and Ngo would finish 2nd with a 1:53.63.
Whittier is resting up to head into the SCIAC Championships this week at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center in Commerce, Calif. The meet will take place from Wednesday-Saturday with the 200 Medley Relay Final starting on Wednesday at 6PM.
