Poets cruise to 8-1 victory over Puget Sound

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier men's tennis team continued its dominance as it cruised to an 8-1 victory over Puget Sound University Wednesday afternoon at the Ettinger Tennis Courts.

The Poets (6-2) earned the first two points of the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles but saw its attempt at a clean sweep end after the Loggers cut the deficit to 2-1 with an 8-5 win at the third doubles position.

The freshmen team of Andrew Hansen and Chris Schommer won 8-3 at the second slot while junior Patricio Carregha and sophomore Julian Seneviratne secured an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles.

Carregha was the first off the courts in singles with an empathic 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. Hansen followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the fourth position and Schommer officially clinched the win at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win.

Despite having the match already in hand, the Poets continued to roll as Frank Sun, Juan Luis Perez and Seneviratne all won their respective matches.

Seneviratne's 7-6 (4), 6-2 win at the top spot was his sixth consecutive singles victory.

Sun and Perez both won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 and 6-3, 7-5, respectively

The Poets return to action on Thursday, March 24, as they host Salisbury at 2 pm.
