LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Whittier College men's tennis team made quick work of the Occidental College Tigers Friday afternoon winning 8-1 improving to 5-7, 1-2 SCIAC.
Doubles gave up a combined eight games. David Stanko (Morena Valley, Calif.) and Jeff Lee (South Korea) teamed up at No. 3 winning 8-1 over Anoop D. Souza and Kyle Oye. Samuel Farmer (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Andrew You (Arcadia, Calif.) took out the No. 1 team of Cameron Coe and Isa Kabira 8-3 and Troy Chavez (Temecula, Calif.) and Tyler Linscott (Tuscon, AZ) rounded out the scoring with an 8-4 win over Erik Silverness and Trevor Brown.
Leading 3-0, the Poets made some changes in singles keeping their top two in but moving in three subs off the bench. Stanko moved up into the No. 3 slot and was joined by Lee (No. 4), Joseph Laguna (Santa Ana, Calif.) (No. 5), and Jehan Godrej (Los Altos, Calif.) (No. 6).
Godrej picked up his first collegiate victory winning 6-0, 6-0 over Carlos Flores. Stanko put away Coe 6-2, 6-0, and You followed suit against Kabira 6-0, 6-2. Farmer got through Trevor Brown 6-2, 6-1 at the top spot and Laguna after rolling 6-1 in his first set managed to squeak out the second set in a breaker 7-6 (5) over D'Souza.
The lone point for Oxy came at No. 4 as Lee would go down in three sets against Silverness. He won the first set 6-2 in impressive fashion but dropped the second 6-2 and ultimately fell 10-5 in a third set super tiebreaker.
Whittier returns to the court next Friday, April 8 when they host Chapman University beginning at 3:00pm.
