WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College men's tennis team nearly pulled off the upset over No. 36 UC Santa Cruz Sunday falling 5-4 at the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts.

The Poets put the Banana Slugs in an early hole taking two of three doubles.  Andrew You (Arcadia, Calif.) and Samuel Farmer (Carlsbad, Calif.) got things started with an 8-5 win at No. 1 over Alexander Flora and Adrian Sirovica.

Sean Jardinico (Pleasant Valley, NY) and David Stanko (Morena Valley, Calif.) followed at No. 3 winning 8-5 over Sean Hollister and Derek Levchenko.  The lone loss came at No. 2 as Tyler Linscott (Tuscon, AZ) and Troy Chavez (Temecula, Calif.) fell 8-4 to Ryan Dugan and Chad Stone.

Singles proved a battle but fell in favor of UCSC as they won four of six matches to clinch.  Flora made quick work of Chavez at No. 6 6-2, 6-1.  Farmer dropped a tough 7-5, 6-3 decision at No. 1 to Sirovica and Jardinico would fall in a tight 6-4, 7-6 (5) nail-biter at No. 3.

You kept the Poets in striking distance winning decisively at No. 2 6-3, 7-5 over Stone and Stanko continues to roll at No. 4 dismissing Dugan 6-4, 7-5.  The decisive match came down to No. 5 where Linscott forced a third set only to fall 6-2 to Levchenko.  Linscott dropped the first set 6-3 but battled to level the match at a set apiece winning the second 7-5.
