WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Tennis team continues to look strong as they rolled past Chapman University in a key Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match-up 6-3 at the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts.
Despite a tough loss at No. 1 doubles from Andrew You (Arcadia, Calif.) and Samuel Farmer (Carlsbad, Calif.) 8-6 to Brett Buford and Charlie Werman, the No. 2 and No. 3 teams stepped up to give the Purple & Gold a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Troy Chavez (Temecula, Calif.) and Tyler Linscott (Tuscon, AZ) held on for a late break over Sam Mitteldorf and Matthew Mead 8-5 and David Stanko (Morena Valley, Calif.) and Sean Jardinico (Pleasant Valley, Calif.) faced little test at No. 3 cruising to the 8-2 victory over Chris Damion and Josh Sarsfield.
In singles, the Poets continued where they left off after doubles taking four of six matches. Farmer quickly got rid of Buford 6-2, 7-5 at the top. Stanko handled business 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 over Sam Mittledorf and Chavez moved up to No. 5 and took care of Sarsfield 6-3, 6-0.
The match of the day came at No. 4 where Linscott needed three sets to get rid of Morris dropping the first set 7-5, before rolling 6-3, 10-6.
The lone losses came at No. 2 and No. 6 singles. Jardinico fell at No. 2 filling in for You dropping a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Werman. Jeff Lee (South Korea) was the other being shutout 6-0, 6-0 by Rasmus Helms at No. 6.
Whittier begins a three day trip to Ventura, Calif. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday as they take part in the Ojai Championships where they will take on a variety of schools across California in Division III.
