WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Tennis team was untested against Northwest opponent Linfield College rolling 8-1 at the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts.
Whittier moves to 5-8, 1-1 SCIAC and finish 2-1 against Northwest Conference opponents.
The Purple & Gold took two of three doubles before sweeping singles action. Pim Van Der Veer (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and Matt Yanuck (Studio City, Calif.) got things rolling at No. 2 winning 8-0 and Chris Palacio (El Centro, Calif.) and Jesse Eccles got back on track at No. 3 with a clean 8-4 win. The lone loss came at the top from Maxwell Koszowski (Denver, CO) and Thomas Koszowski (Denver, CO) who fell 8-4.
In singles WC ran away with it. Palacio swept at No. 5 6-2, 6-2 and T. Koszowski needed straights at No. 2 to beat Nathan Saragoza 6-3, 6-2. Van Der Veer cruised in his opening set 6-2 at the top spot but was tested in the second needing a breaker to pull off the win 7-6.
Thomas Davies (Wales) at No. 3 picked up his first win on the season edging Trent Prussing 6-4, 7-6 giving Whittier their sixth point on the day. The final two points for the Poets came in three-setters with Eccles winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 4 and Sam Whitehill (Brisbane, Australia) coming from behind to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.
