WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Water Polo 2019 schedule is highlighted by four tournaments, which span from San Diego, Calif. to Davis, Calif. to help prepare the Poets for the 14-game conference grind.
The Purple & Gold are coming off a strong 2018 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament appearance and are ready to make an even bigger splash in 2019.
Whittier gets their season started with a trip down South to San Diego where they will take part in the UCSD Invite on September 7-8. The very next weekend, September 14 they remain on the road but will travel East to compete in the Inland Empire Classic.
Following a week of preparations, the Purple & Gold will then travel up to Davis to take part in the AGGIE Round-Up. Here they will take on Austin College (September 21 @ 9:15am), Uni. of Pacific (September 21 @ 6:00pm), Santa Clara (September 22 @ 9:15am), and San Jose State (September 22 @ 1:00pm).
Upon their return they then have two days to get ready for conference play as they travel to take on reigning champ Pomona-Pitzer on September 25. Then Saturday, September 28 they host Cal Lutheran at 11:00am inside the Slade Aquatic Center. Opening up October competition the Poets take on Claremont-M-S (October 2 @ 7:00pm) at home before traveling for their final invite, which will be at the Gary Troyer Tournament on October 4-5. Back to back road games against Chapman (October 9 @ 7:00pm) and Division I powerhouse UCLA (October 12) keep the schedule going. Whittier then returns to host Redlands (October 16 @ 7:00pm) and Caltech (October 19 @ 11:00am) before ending the month with a pair of games on the road (La Verne – October 23 @ 4:00pm and Cal Lutheran – October 26 @ 11:00am).
The schedule stretches deep into November this season with three straight road games to get it started against Caltech (November 2 @ 11:00am), Occidental (November 2 @ 3:00pm), and Claremont-M-S (November 6 @ 7:00pm). But then wrap up the 2019 regular season with three inside the friendly confines of the Slade Aquatic Center against Pomona-Pitzer (November 9 @ 4:00pm), Chapman (November 13 @ 7:00pm), and Occidental (November 16 @ 11:00am).
The top four SCIAC teams advance to the SCIAC Tournament which is Nov. 22 and 24 with the champion and runner-up advancing to the inaugural Division III National Championships on Dec. 6 and 8.
Whittier finished 2018 15-14, 10-4 SCIAC and posted a 2nd Place finish in the final standings. Freshman Eric Borunda was named the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year and joined Hans Zdolsek, Murat Ersoz as All-SCIAC honorees and ACWPC All-Americans.
