THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Whittier College Softball team owned the Regals of Cal Lutheran University Saturday but could only manage the split as CLU came back to take game two.

The Poets shutout the Regals 7-0 in game one and held a 4-0 lead in the second before CLU came up with five runs over the final two innings to take the second 5-4.  With the split the Poets move to 12-16, 8-8 SCIAC and sit in 3rd place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Standings.

Game 1 (W, 7-0)

After three scoreless innings, the Poets finally got on the scoreboard in the 4th with three runs coming across thanks to a single from Brianna Alvarez (Montebello, Calif.) and a double by Sierra Rodriguez (Whittier, Calif.)

In the 6th, Rodriguez struck again this time to center as she doubled in Alvarez that moved the score to 3-0.

In the 7th, Whittier opened the game up plating another three runs as Danica Cooley (Paia, HI), who was pinch running for Marialena Ahern (Fremont, Calif.) came across after a throwing error by the catcher.  Then with two outs, Megan Heal (San Jose, Calif.) put the game out of reach as she doubled to right center that plated Kalei Guillermo (Aiea, HI) and Ally Fonseca (Pico Rivera, Calif.).

Whittier outhit the Regals 14-5 led by Rodriguez who was 3-5 with three runs batted in.  Natalia Sanchez was 2-4 and Alvarez was 1-4 scoring once and driving in one.

Samantha Blum (San Jose, Calif.) earned the win going a complete game giving up just five hits with four strikeouts.

Game 2 (L, 5-4)

The Purple & Gold kept their hot bats going in the second game going in front 4-0 through the first four innings.  Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.) hit a solo shot in the 1st inning to left center and then came up in the 3rd with a clutch single to left, which scored Alvarez and Guillermo.

CLU finally got on the scoreboard in the 5th with Mikaela Mayhew grounding out into the outfield.  The Poets got it back however the very next inning as Rebecca Barber (El Monte, Calif.) would single to right, which plated Dani Rozhon (Apple Valley, Calif.).

The 4-1 lead would evaporate however as CLU would capitalize on two errors in the 6th that allowed four runs to come across giving the Regals their first lead on the day at 5-4.

Whittier had a chance to tie the game up in the top half of the 7th.  Rodriguez singled to second base and moved up to second after a sacrifice bunt by Whitney but she would get stranded there as Ahern flied out to center and Kaitlyn Garza (Chino, Calif.) struck out that ended the rally.

The Poets again outhit the Regals 12-6 with Whitney going 2-3 with a run scored and three RBI's.  Rodriguez was 2-4 and Garza was 2-3.

Annika Seedborg (Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.) got the start and picked up the no decision after going 5.0 innings giving up one earned run on five hits.  Blum came in relief and suffered the loss going an inning giving up two unearned runs on one hit.

Whittier returns home this Friday, April 14 as they host the University of Redlands with game times set for 2:00pm and 4:00pm.
