WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Softball team put together a statement series Friday against the University of Redlands winning 11-4 and 10-1 at Palmer Field.

The last time these two teams met the Poets and Bulldogs split but the second time around it was all Purple & Gold as they improve to 12-16-1, 9-11 SCIAC.

Game 1 (W, 11-4)

Redlands got on the scoreboard in the top half of the 1st on a solo shot from Rivas but saw Whittier respond with two in their opening at-bats.  It was a crazy inning with Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.) singling through the right side and Hayley Wishner (Chino, Calif.) reaching on an error by the third baseman.  The very next batter Brittany Attaway (Claremont, Calif.) drove one to deep center and with the runner tagging at first, Attaway ran past her even though the ball ended up going over the center field fence.  Due to the rules it turned out to be a single and Attaway was out on the play.  Two runners though did come home however.

In the 3rd, UR went back on top with a three-spot that pushed the score to 4-2 but that lead wouldn't hold as Whittier answered with five in their at-bats before adding a run in the 4th and another three in the 5th that put the game out of reach.

Opening up their scoring they used five hits, which included a Naomi Martinez (Marina Del Rey, Calif.) single to right center that plated two and then a three-run shot from Jade Sanchez (Whittier, Calif.) that brought in another three.  Whitney got into the mix in the 4th with a solo shot and then in the 5th, Whittier capitalized on two Bulldog miscues that moved the score to 11-4.

Amanda Melodia (Placentia, Calif.) picked up the win going a complete game giving up four runs on 10 hits, while striking out three.  She improves to 4-3.  Offensively, Sanchez was 3-for-4 scoring twice and driving in three.  Whitney was 2-for-4 coming in three times and driving in another and Attaway was 1-for-1 with a run scored and two runs batted in.

Game 2 (W, 10-1; 5-Innings)

The Poets only needed five innings to complete the sweep.  They jumped out in front quickly with five runs across the first two innings.  They combined for three hits from Brianna MaGee (Torrance, Calif.), Attaway, and Sanchez in the bottom half of the 1st and then used a UR error, an Emily Facio (Chino, Calif.) triple and a Wishner single to right to go on top 5-0.

Redlands got one back in the 4th but it wouldn't be enough as Whittier added another five in the bottom half of the inning coming on four hits and two outs.  Attaway led off the frame with a walk and then moved up to second on a Natalia Sanchez (Chino Hills, Calif.) single up the middle.  Martinez then reached on an error by the pitcher and Sanchez made them pay with a triple down the right field line.  But the inning wasn't done as Jannelle Ha (Arcadia, Calif.) kept it going with a double to right center followed by a Facio single through the right side.

Alexis Vargas (Pomona, Calif.) got the start and went a complete game going 4.2 innings giving up just one run on two hits.  She moves to 3-7.

Sanchez finished the game 2-for-3 scoring once and driving in five.  Facio was a perfect 3-for-3 and Attaway was 1-for-1 scoring twice, driving in two and drawing a pair of walks.
