CLAREMONT, Calif. – After falling 6-5 in extras to Pomona-Pitzer to start their day, the Whittier College Softball team was then forced to take on No. 1 Claremont-M-S in the nightcap in order to keep their SCIAC Tournament Championship hopes alive.

Whittier and Claremont-M-S were able to get through six complete innings before the game was called due to darkness.  The Purple & Gold lead 5-4 going into the Top Half of the 7th and will resume tomorrow, Sunday, May 5 at 10:00am with the winner advancing to the Championship game at 12:00pm.

The match-up once again featured the top seeded Athenas who were playing without their top performer Chloe Amarilla who was injured in the morning contest against Chapman.

Whittier struck first with a pair of runs in the 2nd as Emily Facio (Chino, Calif.) and Brianna MaGee (Torrance, Calif.) were able to add base hits scoring Natalia Sanchez (Chino Hills, Calif.) and Naomi Martinez (Marina Del Rey, Calif.) who both got on with walks.  CMS got those runs back the very next inning but saw WC again come up with the go-ahead run in the bottom half of the frame coming on two outs off the bat of Martinez who singled up the middle.

CMS tied things up on a Poet miscue in the 4th and then added their fourth run in the 5th off the bat of Perron who doubled to right field.  But Whittier still managed to hold that one-run advantage with Brittany Attaway (Claremont, Calif.) singling to the pitcher that plated MaGee in the 4th.  In the 5th, WC went back on top and could have added more getting two runners on and nobody out.  Sanchez started things off with a walk and was followed by a pair of base hits from Ha and Martinez.  But they couldn't tack on insurance as Megan Heal (San Jose, Calif.) grounded out on the infield followed by an Ashlei Sanchez (San Dimas, Calif.) L4-5 double play that ended the threat.

Sam Casanas (La Habra, Calif.) got the start and went 3.0 Innings giving up two runs on five hits.  Alexis Vargas (Pomona, Calif.) is currently in the game and has gone 3.0 Innings thus far giving up a pair of runs on three hits.

MaGee is 2-for-3 for the game driving in one and scoring another.  Martinez is a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI's and Attaway is 1-for-1 with a run and an RBI.
