Women’s Track & Field Edges Regals 83-80 at SCIAC

PASADENA, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Track & Field team had a strong performance on Saturday during SCIAC No. 2 upsetting Cal Lutheran University 83-80 before falling to Claremont-M-S 107-56.

The Purple & Gold won six events (200m, 400m, 800m, 400mH, 4x400 Relay, Shot Put).

Gabriella Torres Joubert (Tacoma, WA) posted a 59.64 in the 400m to win the event, while moving to 5th All-Time in the Whittier College record books.  Tiazha Hogue (Redlands, Calif.) led the sprints winning the 200m with a time of 26.12 after posting a 2nd place finish in the 100m with a time of 12.69.  She now ranks 4th All-Time in the record books in both events.  In the distance, Anahy Covarrubias (Los Angeles, Calif.) won the 800m with a time of 2:19.74.

The 4x400 Relay team of Torres Joubert, Julia Gonzalez (Yorba Linda, Calif.), Elyse Espe (Wishon, Calif.), and Elizabeth Donnelly (Langley, VA) ran to a quick 4:03.60, which was good enough to win the event.  This time beat out the second place finishers by almost ten seconds (4:03.60-4:13.58) and they also posted the second fastest time in school history. 

In the throws Sabrina Van Beek (Atascadero, Calif.) had a huge day placing 2nd in all of her events, which included the Hammer (41.06m), Discus (31.94m), and Shot Put (10.27m).  She picked up major points for the Purple & Gold.  Joining her was freshman Vanessa Martinez (La Mirada, Calif.) who won the Shot Put with a throw of 10.99m.

Espe was another standout on the day for the Poets.  She set the school record in the 400mH with a time of 1:02.88.  This was good enough to win the event, while at the same time ranking her No. 1 in SCIAC and No. 4 in Division III.  She also ran a personal best in the 100mH with a time of 16.69, which places her 8th in program history.                         

Whittier hosts their first Invite this Friday, April 5 when they welcome in Chapman University, St. Thomas (MN), Augsburg (MN), Merritt College, unattached and professional athletes and other SCIAC programs for the Whittier Twilight Meet.  Field events start at 3:30pm and Track Events at 4:00pm.
