ORANGE, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Basketball team opened up 2019 Saturday afternoon and saw their losing skid stretch to five games as they fell 85-60 to Chapman University.

It has been a tough stretch of games for the Purple & Gold as they drop to 5-6, 2-2 SCIAC but even with the loss they still sit in a tie for 5th in the SCIAC Standings.

Monica Hanna (Bellflower, Calif.) was the lone Poet in double figures finishing with 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting.  Cali Cubel (Oceanside, Calif.) added nine points with a pair of assists and three steals and Mia Maglinte (Roseville, Calif.) chipped in with eight points and a couple steals.

Teani White (Burbank, Calif.) ran the point and finished with six points and a couple of boards going 3-for-7 from the field and Emily Guerena (Montebello, Calif.) led the bench with five points and five rebounds in 15 minutes of action.

Whittier fell behind early 27-11 after the first quarter.  They put up 17 points in the second, shooting 43% from the field but were still behind by double digits at halftime.  Both teams put up 18 points in the third quarter, which was the most by WC in a period.  Then in the fourth, CU managed to hold a slight 18-14 advantage giving them the home victory.

Whittier, despite shooting 44% from the field and 27% from three-point territory, found the battle on the glass to be a tough one hauling in just 16 rebounds on the afternoon (43-16).  They forced 19 Chapman turnovers and turned them into 13 points, earned 20 points in the paint, and received 23 points from the bench.

Whittier remains on the road this Wednesday, January 9 as they travel to Claremont, Calif. to take on Pomona-Pitzer beginning at 7:00pm.
