CLAREMONT, Calif. – Claremont-M-S needed a big second half Wednesday night to top the Whittier College Women's Basketball team 56-41.
The Purple & Gold threatened the Athenas winning streak but couldn't complete the upset as CMS improved to 19-2, 11-1 SCIAC, while earning their 15th consecutive win. Whittier drops now to 9-12, 6-8 SCIAC.
Cali Cubel (Oceanside, Calif.) was the lone Poet in double figures finishing with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Laura Stroud (Ann Arbor, MI), Teani White (Burbank, Calif.), and Mia Maglinte (Roseville, Calif.) each added five points apiece, with Stroud grabbing four boards. Off the bench, Emily Guerena (Montebello, Calif.) finished with two points but grabbed five boards and Zaria Branch (San Diego, Calif.) finished with three points and six rebounds.
Whittier started off strong going out on top 12-6 in the first quarter behind a five-point push from Maglinte, which included a three-pointer and a pair of free throws. After the opening ten minutes the Purple & Gold led 13-8. In the second CMS found their offense putting up 16 points to go on top 24-20 at the break. In the third the teams were deadlocked with each program adding 10 points apiece, which kept it a four-point game. But in the fourth it was all Athenas, pulling away as they outscored Whittier 22-11 to pull off the home victory.
Whittier shot 26.5% from the field, 33.3% from behind the arc and hauled in 36 rebounds. But the difference late were turnovers. The Poets turned it over 21 times, which led to 18 points for the Athenas. CMS also won the battle in the paint 26-6.
Whittier returns home this Saturday, February 9 for PAC the GAC as they host Occidental College beginning at 5:00pm.
