Senior Day a Success; Poets Cruise past Whitworth 20-5

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Lacrosse team had a successful Senior day Saturday sending their seven seniors off in impressive fashion with a lopsided 20-5 victory over Whitworth University.

The Purple & Gold have now won two of their last three and improve to 3-6, 0-4 SCIAC.

Prior to the game Head Coach Sylvia Queener recognized her senior class, which included Jordan Alcarez (Whittier, Calif.), Gabby Boller (Howell, NJ), Emily Hansen (Seal Beach, Calif.), Nicole Lindke (Pleasanton, Calif.), Lexie Meanor (Sewickley, PA), Emily Olague (San Ramon, Calif.), and Madison Topping (El Dorado Hills, Calif.).

Whittier took on a first year program in Whitworth University and despite being challenged in the first five minutes was able to use a tough defense that forced 26 Pirate turnovers.

The Poets put up 11 goals in the first half with three coming from Meanor and Hansen.  Meanor also added five assists in the period.  WC went on top 2-0 before Whitworth was able to find the back of the goal from Jordan Cain.  Hansen went back to back after that before Trinity Frank collected her first of the game coming at the 17:59 mark. 

Then it was all Purple & Gold going on a 7-1 run to close out the half. 

In the second half Whittier moved the ball around working on possession but was still able to tack on another nine goals.  Meanor added four of them and Sarah Morgan (Tustin, Calif.) with another three.

Topping picked up the win between the posts finishing with three saves against eight shots.  Meanor finished with 13 points on the day adding seven goals and six assists.  She also added five groundballs, five draw controls, and two caused turnovers.  Morgan put up a three goal and four assist effort and Hansen went three and three to go with three GB's, six draws and two caused turnovers.        

Whittier outshot Whitworth 36-13 and won 19 draw controls.  They picked up 30 groundballs and was 15-for-17 on clear attempts.         

Whittier remains at home this Wednesday, March 27 when they take on Chicago beginning at 7:00pm.
