WHITTIER, Calif. – Wednesday night proved to be the most exciting game yet this season for the Whittier College Women's Soccer team as Clarissa Field (Whittier, Calif.) would add a golden goal in the second overtime to top Chapman University 1-0.
The Purple & Gold opened Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play and have improved to 2-0-1, 1-0 SCIAC, while Chapman drops to 2-2, 0-1 SCIAC. It's the second game for the Poets on the season that has gone into extra time.
It was a scoreless game for the first 105 minutes until Field was able to connect for the game-winner with just under five minutes remaining in the second OT period. Freshman Savannah Brown (La Mirada, Calif.) served a ball from the far side into the box, the first shot attempt would be off the mark but the second came off the foot of Field who was able to send it to the bottom left corner for a tap in.
Whittier was outshot on the game 19-11 and was at a disadvantage on corner kicks at 5-3. Senior Stella Thermos (Seal Beach, Calif.) once again played huge between the posts collecting her second win on the season improving to 2-0-1, while finishing with a season high eight saves. She has yet to give up a goal on the season in three contests played, while the Poet defensive unit, consisting of Jenna Muise (Chino Hills, Calif.), Sophie Nicotero (Sun City, Calif.), Mikaela Malsy (Westminster, Calif.), Clarissa Terris (Saugus, Calif.), Analisa Murillo (Murrieta, Calif.) has surrendered just one goal in three games, while holding their opponents to a .073 shot percentage and a 0.29 goals against average.
Whittier has their third straight home contest this Saturday, September 8 when they welcome in Occidental College beginning at 7:00pm.
