WHITTIER, Calif. – After eighty eight minutes of scoreless soccer Wednesday night, the Whittier College Women's Soccer team finally broke through with the game-winner coming from freshman Janelle Guzman (Montebello, Calif.).
The go-ahead goal came at the 88:30 mark and sent the University of Redlands home with a 1-0 loss and their second conference loss on the season. It was a much needed victory for the Purple & Gold as they improve to 4-2-4, 3-2-3 SCIAC. They are now 1-0-2 over their last three games and have shutout their last three opponents.
It was back and forth throughout with the Poets holding a 12-11 advantage on shots. They also owned the only corner kick on the evening as well. Jazmin Gomez (Norwalk, Calif.) started the final connection coming down the far side before sending in a cross, which found the foot of Guzman who was able to finish with her right.
In the early stages of the game, Jenna Muise and Clarissa Terris (Saugus, Calif.) each tested Bulldog keeper Brittany Dinkins as they each put shots on frame. Soon after, Isabela Vargas (Newberg, Calif.) and Clarissa Field (Whittier, Calif.) got into the mix each taking strikes but both would miss wide. Redlands looked to go up at the break with Emily Falla and Louisa Alstot each getting space and finding looks but the first would be turned away by Vanessa Martinez (La Mirada, Calif.) and the second would miss wide.
The second half was physical with a combined 16 shots being taken. In the 74th minute Andrea Aldama (Gardena, Calif.) had her second look of the half but her ensuing shot would get denied by Dinkins. The best opportunity for Redlands came in the 79th minute when Logan Swim, Alexa Groesser, and Alstot would uncork back to back to back shots but each would get turned away by Martinez who kept her clean sheet intact.
Martinez played all 90:00 minutes and finished with seven saves. Aldama led the offense with three shots and Miranda Yzabal (Whittier, Calif.) finished with two.
Whittier is on the road this Saturday, October 6 when they take on Chapman University beginning at 7:00pm.
