WHITTIER, Calif. – For the fifth time over their last six games the Whittier College Women's Soccer team has been held scoreless as they dropped a 2-0 decision to Occidental College at Jack Kemp Stadium.

With the loss the Poets drop to 4-4-4, 3-4-3 SCIAC and currently sit in 6th place within the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Standings.

The Purple & Gold came into the match-up without two of their top defenders and were facing an Oxy team undefeated on the season and they gave them all they could handle. WC fell unlucky in the 28th minute being called for a handball in the box handing Oxy a PK, which Katherine Kim would convert putting the Tigers on top 1-0.

Then with a minute to play, Oxy added insurance this time from Elleni Bekele.  Karla Alas-Lopez drove the ball up the right sideline on a 3-on-2 and hit the post with a shot.  Bekele was there for the rebound in front of the net, took a touch to get around Poet keeper Vanessa Martinez (La Mirada, Calif.) but was pulled down by her ankle giving Oxy their second PK on the evening.  Bekele then stepped up and hit a slow roller into the net that put the game out of reach.

Martinez played all 90:00 minutes finishing with seven saves, which included back-to-back-to-back denials within an eight minute span.  Andrea Aldama (Gardena, Calif.) led the offense with two shots and one being on frame.

Whittier was outshot on the night 13-7 but held a 2-1 advantage on corner kicks.

Whittier has the weekend off before returning to competition next Wednesday, October 17 when they host the University of La Verne beginning at 7:00pm.
