CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Soccer team suffered their first loss within Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play Wednesday afternoon as they fell 3-0 to No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer.
With the loss the Poets drop to 1-3-3, 1-1-1 SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer improves to 7-0-1, 3-0 SCIAC.
Sophomore Vanessa Martinez (La Mirada, Calif.) make 12 stops between the posts against 23 shots taken by the Sagehens, but it wouldn't be enough to overcome the three goals put up in the first half by PP.
The scoring got started in the 13th minute off a free kick from Emily Tomz who landed a ball in the box, which was quickly struck following a scramble by Bria VarnBuhler. Six minutes later the lead was doubled this time from Brianna Lau who played a hard diagonal through ball that cut through the Poets back line finding the feet of Lily Gane who settled and slotted a ball past Martinez.
The final goal came right before the half when Brooke Bordonaro found Hannah Mandell backpost for a header. This gave PP a 3-0 lead at the break and they didn't look back.
Whittier was outshot on the game 23-3, which included being held to just one in the first half. Each team also added three corner kicks. The only connection on frame for WC came in the 73rd minute from Clarissa Field (Whittier, Calif.), but her shot would get stopped by Sagehen keeper Isa Berardo.
Whittier returns home this Saturday, September 28 when they host the University of La Verne beginning at 7:00pm.
