WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Soccer team got back on track this past week edging Caltech 2-1 at Memorial Stadium to move into 4th place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Standings.

Whittier improves to 2-4-5, 2-2-3 SCIAC, while Caltech drops to 0-12, 0-6 SCIAC.

The Purple & Gold had been held scoreless over their past five contests and broke the slump with a goal in each half Wednesday night to pull off their second win on the season.

It was a strong first half by the Poets taking 10 shots with six being on frame.  It was scoreless across the first 31:00 minutes until Janelle Guzman (Montebello, Calif.) was able to break through with her second goal on the season. Erin Myers (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) carried possession down the far wing and then crossed it into the box finding Guzman who finished.  In the 2nd half leading 1-0 the Poets added insurance coming eight minutes in this time from freshman Michelle Abarca (Long Beach, Calif.) who was fed by Alexis Huff (Henderson, NV) off a corner kick.  This goal proved crucial because Caltech would eventually connect with eight minutes left to play from Schuyler Dick who finished a bouncing ball in the box after getting fed by Rachel Sun.

Makayla Moraga (Whittier, Calif.) led the offense with five shots, two being on frame.  Huff added three shots and Guzman with two.  Between the posts freshman Samantha Pearson (Long Beach, Calif.) got the start playing all 90:00 minutes and finishing with a pair of saves as she collected her first collegiate victory.

Whittier outshot Caltech 15-9 and earned three corner kicks, all coming in the second half.

Whittier has a bye this weekend and returns to the pitch next Wednesday, October 16 when they travel to take on Occidental College beginning at 5:00pm.
