PASADENA, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Soccer team completed the sweep over Caltech Wednesday afternoon pulling out the 3-1 victory on the road to keep themselves in the hunt for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament berth.
Whittier put some early pressure on Caltech keeper Valerie Hetherington with three shots on frame, but she would rise up to get three stops. The Purple & Gold finally broke through in the 14th minute from freshman Mackenzie Reed (Mililani, HI) who was fed by Jazmin Gomez (Norwalk, Calif.), which set-up a nice run on the right side. Caltech received a couple looks late in the half but both would get turned away from Vanessa Martinez (La Mirada, Calif.) keeping the game at a one-goal differential at the half.
A quick strike in the second half gave Whittier a 2-0 advantage. Five minutes into the period Alexis Huff (Henderson, NV) was able to draw out the Caltech keeper before deflecting a shot off a defender and into the goal. The Beavers though were able to respond quickly as Krystin Brown connected off a free-kick from on top of the box cutting the deficit in half five minutes later.
The Poets continued to pressure Hetherington between the posts putting another three shots on frame from Makayla Moraga (Whittier, Calif.), Janelle Guzman (Montebello, Calif.), and Reed, but again she was able to come up with some big saves that kept the score at 2-1. Later in the half Whittier added insurance again coming from Reed who received a nice through ball from Gomez before beating the defense with a run from the right side.
Whittier held the edge on shots at 17-15 and corner kicks at 4-3. Martinez played all 90:00 minutes and posted eight saves in the win. Reed took six shots on the game with four being on frame with two goals. Gomez tallied a pair of assists with two shots and Moraga and Guzman each added two shots apiece.
Whittier looks to stay in the hunt for the SCIAC Post Season Tournament as they host Occidental College this Saturday, October 26 beginning at 7:00pm.
