WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Soccer team saw their Senior Night spoiled Wednesday as No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer came away with the 4-0 victory.
The Purple & Gold held the high-powered offense of the Sagehens scoreless over the opening 45:00 minutes but couldn't keep it going as they gave up four second half tallies falling to 3-7-5, 3-5-3 SCIAC.
Freshman Samantha Pearson (Long Beach, Calif.) got the start between the posts with Vanessa Martinez (La Mirada, Calif.) sidelined with an injury and Pearson impressed totaling nine saves, seven of which came in the opening half.
Once again offense was tough to come by as Whittier took just three shots all coming in the first half. Two of the three strikes were on frame coming from Alexis Huff (Henderson, NV) and Makayla Moraga (Whittier, Calif.). Charlotte Tapp got the scoring started three minutes into the second half getting fed by Chloe Hamer before finishing with the eventual game-winning goal. Four minutes later Hannah Mandell got into the mix with an unassisted volley past a diving Pearson. But it didn't end there as PP continued to pressure getting their third tally three minutes later from Bria VarnBuhler who received a cross from Taylor Venenciano. VarnBuhler though wasn't finished coming back in the 62nd minute and putting away her second of the game as Tapp found her in the middle of the box for insurance.
Whittier was outshot 22-3 on the game and was blanked on corner kicks 4-0.
Whittier wraps up their 2019 schedule this Saturday, November 2 when they travel to take on the University of Redlands beginning at 11:00am.
