Whittier splits against Caltech and Mills

PASADENA, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Swimming & Diving team pulled off a split Saturday morning beating Mills College 147-84 before falling to Caltech 158-95.  

Senior Becca Ayers (La Habra, Calif.) and freshman Megan Thai (Alhambra, Calif.) crushed it on the boards to get the Poets major points.  They went 1-2 on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.  Ayers won both events with scores of 285.70 (3-meter) and 275.75 (1-meter), and Thai was in a close second with scores of 264.85 (3-meter) and 253.45 (1-meter). 

The first swim event on the day was the 200 Medley Relay.  Brooke Geske (San Pedro, Calif.) joined Brenda Shanahan (San Ramon, Calif.), Esther Choe (Mercer Island, WA), and Allie Novak (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) posting a 2nd place finish with a mark of 1:55.85.  Novak kept the momentum going in the 200 Free finishing 2nd with a time of 2:08.34 before returning in the distance, 500 Free taking 2nd again (5:41.25).  Geske got her first action in the 100 Back in a tight race getting edged by a millisecond to place 2nd with a time of 1:00.01.  She also swam the 200 Back, again taking 2nd this time with a time of 2:11.94. 

Senior Maya Williams-Young (Eugene, OR) joined Geske in the 100 Back and 200 Back placing 5th in both with times of 1:13.51 and 2:43.33, respectively.  Victoria Unger (Granite Bay, Calif.) had a strong showing in her two events placing 2nd in the 200 Fly (2:49.25) and 3rd in the 500 Free (6:26.51).

Choe who returned from illness got into the scoring category in the 100 Free finishing 3rd with a time of 58.50 before taking 2nd in her main event, the 100 Fly with a mark of 1:05.70.  Shanahan who has had a strong season thus far kept it going Saturday winning the 50 Free with a time of 25.50 and then taking 2nd in the 100 Free (56.50).  Morgan Molinaro (Chino Hills, Calif.) was another scorer for the Poets joining Shanahan in the 50 Free placing 3rd with a time of 27.40.

The Purple & Gold made a statement in their final event, the 200 Free Relay, as Geske, Shanahan, Choe, and Molinaro would win the event by over two seconds with a time of 1:43.56.      

Whittier returns home to the Slade Aquatic Center on Saturday, February 2 as they host Chapman University beginning at 11:00am.
