LA VERNE, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Water Polo team opened up Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play Wednesday afternoon beating the University of La Verne 12-8.

The Purple & Gold remain red hot improving to 5-3, 1-0 SCIAC.  They stretch their winning streak to four in a row and have now won five of their last six.

The game started off with back to back 5-meter penalties awarded to La Verne.  They capitalized on both going on top 2-0.  But after that it was all Whittier outscoring the Leopards 7-0, which stretched almost fourteen minutes.  During the run the Poets added three power plays from Teresa Marchetti (Messina, Italy), Jacqueline Au (Los Angeles, Calif.), and Sawyer Bellville (Chino, Calif.).  Bellville also added another two and Marchetti and Anastacia Gonzalez (Montebello, Calif.) would tack on insurance giving WC a 7-3 lead at the break.

Gonzalez and Marchetti opened up the scoring to start the 3rd.  Marchetti added a 5-meter conversion soon after pushing the score to 10-5.  Then in the fourth, La Verne made a push adding three, two of which came over the final 4:00 minutes.  But this run would end as Ana Alumbaugh (Honolulu, HI) and Gonzalez would each add insurance that gave WC the road victory.

Whittier outshot La Verne 29-27 and were 3-of-8 on power plays.  Tahlia Pou (Stockton, Calif.) got the start in goal and finished with four saves and two steals and Lauren Tapia (Whittier, Calif.) came in for the second half registering nine stops.

Marchetti led the offense with four goals and an assist.  Bellville added three goals with an assist and two steals and Gonzalez finished with three tallies.

Whittier remains in SCIAC play this Saturday, March 9 as they host Pomona-Pitzer beginning at 11:00am.
