WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Water Polo team was stunned Wednesday night falling 10-8 to the University of La Verne.

The Purple & Gold have had a tough stretch of games losing three straight falling to 10-7, 6-3 SCIAC.  They currently sit tied with La Verne in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Standings but hold a slight edge for 3rd in the standings based on goal differential.

It was a tough game throughout.  A combined eight goals were scored in the first quarter with La Verne holding a 5-3 edge.  In the second the defensive units stood strong but ULV was still able to add another to take a 6-3 lead into the half.

The Poets made a push in the 3rd outscoring the Leos 3-2 and despite adding another two in the 4th it wouldn't be enough to top the University of La Verne at home.

Freshman Teresa Marchetti (Messina, Italy), junior transfer Sawyer Bellville (Chino, Calif.) and senior Anastacia Gonzalez (Montebello, Calif.) led the offense all adding two goals and an assist.  Marchetti added the first goal of the game and Bellville added the next two over the opening eight minutes.

Out of the half La Verne got a quick strike but saw WC rattle off three of the next four, which included a Marchetti 5-meter and back to back strikes from Gonzalez.  This made it a two goal game but that's as close as Whittier would get as ULV would land three consecutive power-play opportunities to start the fourth, despite only converting one before adding the insurance late with under a minute to play.

Tahlia Pou (Stockton, Calif.) got the start between the posts and finished with three saves.  Lauren Tapia (Whittier, Calif.) came in relief in the second half and added six stops and a steal.

Whittier outshot La Verne 25-24 but was just 1-for-6 on power-plays.

Whittier returns to the pool this weekend, Saturday, April 6 when they travel to Pomona-Pitzer with game time set for 11:00am.
