Water Polo gets back on track; Roll Oxy 15-5

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Water Polo team got back on track Saturday snapping their five-game losing skid with a lopsided 15-5 win over Occidental College.

The Purple & Gold now improve to 11-9, 7-5 SCIAC and currently sit 4th in the Southern California intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Standings.

Whittier jumped all over the Tigers in the opening quarter 4-1 before taking a 6-3 lead into the half.  In the 3rd, WC added another three goals to stretch their advantage to five and then put the game out of reach over the final eight minutes with a six spot.

Seven different Poets scored led by Sawyer Bellville (Chino, Calif.) with six and an assist.   Freshman Teresa Marchetti (Messina, Italy) added five points with three goals, two dimes and three assists and Jacqueline Au (Los Angeles, Calif.) added a pair of strikes inside set.  Other goal scorers included Roni Ramirez (La Habra, Calif.), Emma Romero (El Segundo, Calif.), Taylor Kleinert (Lodi, Calif.), and Anastacia Gonzalez (Montebello, Calif.).  Ana Alumbaugh (Honolulu, HI) and Bellville each added two steals apiece.    

Whittier outshot Occidental 36-22 and was 6-for-8 on power plays.  Lauren Tapia (Whittier, Calif.) played all 32:00 minutes in goal and finished with six stops and a pair of steals.      

Whittier remains on the road this Wednesday, April 17 when they travel to take on Caltech beginning at 7:00pm.
