WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Water Polo team picked up their biggest win on the season Saturday on Senior Day holding off the University of Redlands 10-7 at the Slade Aquatic Center.

The Purple & Gold sent their two seniors off in impressive fashion, which included Marina Daroca Bazan (Barcelona, Spain) and Anastacia Gonzalez (Montebello, Calif.).  They have now won three in a row and improve to 13-9, 9-5 SCIAC.

With the win they also secure the No. 3 seed in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Post Season Tournament.

Freshman Teresa Marchetti (Messina, Italy) evened things up two minutes into the game.  Redlands was able to convert a 5-meter soon after to go on top but saw the Poets string together six of the next seven that stretched into the 3rd quarter.  WC added four in a row covering a six minute span in the second, with three of them coming from Sawyer Bellville (Chino, Calif.).  Gonzalez ended the run capitalizing on a power-play that moved the score to 5-3 at the half.

Out of the break Whittier moved the margin to four with back to back connections from Gonzalez and Marchetti, but over the ensuing three minutes Redlands would put together their own run of four straight that tied things up.  In the final minute of the third Whittier provided pressure at the top with Gonzalez grabbing a steal and taking a 3-on-1 down to the other side ending with a feed to Bellville backside.  This gave WC an 8-7 advantage.

Over the final eight minutes the defense stepped up for the Purple & Gold holding UR scoreless.  Gonzalez and Bellville each added a tally within the period that stretched the advantage to three and that would be good enough to hold on for the victory.

Tahlia Pou (Stockton, Calif.) played all 32:00 minutes and finished with six stops and a steal.

Bellville led the offense finishing with five goals and an assist along with a pair of steals.  Gonzalez added three goals and a dime and Marchetti finished with a pair of connections, an assist, and three steals.

Whittier begins preparations for the SCIAC Post Season Tournament, set to take place this Friday, April 26 when they travel to take on the No. 2 seed Cal Lutheran Regals.  Game time to be determined.
