Rock Carter

Rock begins his 29th year on the Whittier campus, and was named the Executive Director of Athletics in April 2019 and has become a mainstay in the administration and success of Whittier College Athletics.  Carter’s main responsibilities include assisting and overseeing the internal operations of all 22 intercollegiate teams and staffing within the athletic department.  Rock served as the Interim Athletics Director in 2004-2005. His administrative leadership and loyalty have been greatly appreciated on the Whittier campus and throughout the conference.  Carter spent 13 years as an instructor in the KNS department, teaching courses in Sport Management, Methods of Elementary School Physical Education as well as Fitness and Wellness.  Rock has served on a number of college committees as well as NCAA Basketball Committees, including West Region Tournament Representative in 2005-2008 and NCAA All-Star selection committee from 2008-2010. He is currently serving his 4th year as the SCIAC Men’s Basketball Committee Chair.

Carter is in his 21st season at the helm of the men's basketball program but has been with the team for 26 seasons.  He has amassed a 260-247 record since he took over the program prior to the 1995-96 season.  He has guided his teams to eleven winning seasons, which includes an 18-8, 10-4 SCIAC record in 2011-12 and in the last five years his teams have earned a spot in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Post Season Tournament four times.

Since the 2001-02 campaign, Carter has placed 27 student athletes on the All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team, along with two players being named the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year for the 2012-13 (Chris Barnes- Williams) and 2014-15 (Andrew Torres) seasons. Carter has also had two Ted Ducey Award recipients which recognizes a senior that has exemplified leadership, discipline, determination and sportsmanship and also shown sincerity of purpose in his academic endeavors. The award is voted on by the SCIAC coaches.

Originally from San Diego, Calif., Carter led Whittier to its first SCIAC Postseason Tournament in 2008-09 and a second place regular-season finish in the conference. The 16 wins were the second most wins in his tenure and most since the team won 17 games in the 2002-03 campaign. Whittier has participated in the tournament five times, in its eight years of existence, one of only four schools to do so.

A 1989 graduate of Whittier, Carter earned his Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education and was quickly hired as a full-time assistant to then-Head Coach Dave Jacobs. He worked under Jacobs for four seasons before he was named interim head coach for the 1993-94 season. Carter earned his M.A. in Education Administration in 1994. Jacobs returned for one more season in 1994-95 before Carter was named the fourth head coach in WC history since Aubrey R. Bonham originated the role in 1937.

Carter played two seasons for the Whittier college basketball program before he traded in his high tops for a whistle in 1988. He served as Junior Varsity Head Coach from 1989-1993, where he had a .681 winnings percentage and won three JV conference championships.
