Josh Scurlock '08
had his second straight 100-yard rushing game and threw for 297
yards to lead Whittier College to a 28-7 victory in its SCIAC
opener against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges at Memorial Stadium on
September 29. The Poets are now 2-1 overall and the Sagehens
fall to 1-2.
It took the entire first quarter for either team to make their way
onto the scoreboard. The Poets defense stepped up in the
closing minutes of the quarter with an interception by
James Monaco '09. On the ensuing possession,
Scurlock got the Poets inside the red-zone with a 46-yard pass to
Josh Ollison '11. Two plays later,
Rich Gonzalas '11 bullied his way into the
end-zone from two yards out.
In the second quarter, Whittier's defense forced a three-and-out to
give the offense great field position at their own 45-yard
line. The following five-play drive included a 46-yard run
from Scurlock setting up his 19-yard touchdown pass to Ollison with
11:16 left in the half. Ben Walker '08 split
the uprights on the point after to give Whittier the 14-0
lead. The Sagehens answered with an eleven-play, 63-yard
scoring drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown run from
running back Russell Oka. The Poets extended their lead again
on their next possession. Scurlock found Chris
Delgado '11 for a 14-yard touchdown reception to cap a
six-play, 74-yard drive. The score was 21-7 at the half.
The defenses took over in the rest of the game, with the only other
touchdown coming from the Poets with 2:08 left in the third.
Scurlock and Gonzales connected for a 24-yard pass play that set up
an eight-yard touchdown run from Ollison. The extra point
made the score 28-7, which would eventually be the final score.
Scurlock was 19-for-37 passing with two touchdowns and two
interceptions. He carried the ball sixteen times and gained
113 yards. He has accounted for ten touchdowns this season;
seven in the air. Ollison caught six passes for 97 yards and
one score and rushed for another touchdown. Carroll had a
team-high seven receptions for 95 yards. Delgado also caught a
touchdown pass. Gonzalas ran for a touchdown.
Defensively, Arlo Castelo '08 led the way with 7.5
tackles and a forced fumble. Monaco, Chris Gartrell
'08 and Brent Barstow '09 each
intercepted a pass. The Poets forced three turnovers and
finished with five tackles for a loss and two sacks.
Pomona quarterback Jacob Caron was 15-for-30 for 177 yards in the
air. Colin Regan caught six passes good for 109 yards.
Their leading rusher was Kevin Yamazak,i who carried the ball
twelve times for 49 yards.
The Poets start a three-game road trip on October 6, when they
travel to SCIAC rival California Lutheran University.
Kick-off is scheduled for 1pm.
