Day two of the Purple and Gold Poet Classic in the Graham
Athletics Center was filled with close games and impressive
individual performances. Bethany Lutheran College started the
day with a comeback 57-54 win over Whittier College in the women's
consolation game. Keene State College took the women's
championship trophy back to New Hampshire with 55-49 win over
Goucher College in game two. On the men's side, California
Lutheran University finished undefeated in the classic with a hard
fought 61-48 victory over the University of California, Santa Cruz
in the third game. In the Classic finale, La Sierra
University needed a game-winning shot in the closing seconds to
beat the host, Whittier College by a score of 69-67.
Bethany Lutheran won the consolation game thanks to a double-double
from All-Tournament selection Eva Voss. She scored a
game-high 22 points, grabbed ten rebounds and blocked three
shots. Laura Parochka finished with ten points, four rebounds
and four assists. Leslie Bremer had ten rebounds to go along
with eight points for the Vikings.
The Poets were led by All-Tournament team member, Rosario
Rios-Aguilar. She posted a double-double as well, with 17
points and eleven rebounds. She was also credited with four
assists. Kourtney Zilbert finished with 12 rebounds, nine on
the offensive end, seven points and three steals. Morgan
Sabala also scored seven points and Melissa Johnson ended up with
six points and nine steals.
In the women's championship game, Keene State's Danielle Graveley
scored 18 points on her way to the tournament's Most Valuable
Player award. Alyssa Sapp scored ten points and Nicole
Simmler was two points away from a double-double with eight points
and eleven rebounds. All-Tournament selection Michelle
Boudreau scored eight points and was credited with three assists
and two steals.
Goucher earned second place, and were led by Shadae Swan who scored
26 points for the Gophers. She scored 45 points in two games
and was named to the All-Tournament team. Also on the
All-Tournament team was Taqwisha Richardson who followed up a
double-double on day one with seven rebounds and a blocked shot in
the championship game. Amber Smith finished with nine points,
eleven rebounds, four steals and two assists.
For the men, Cal Lutheran finished 2-0 in the Classic with 18
points from Aaron Fisher. All-Tournament team members Andy
Meier and Deshion Inniss scored twelve and nine points,
respectively. Meier also hauled in six rebounds. Chad
Acerboni finished with a game-high ten rebounds and six points.
UC-Santa Cruz got 14 points and four steals from Ehson
Mortezaie. Ryan Matsuoka was named to the All-Tournament team
after scoring in double figures both games, this time with ten
points.
The last game of the Classic was arguably the most exciting, as La
Sierra won on a game-winning jumper from Ryan White with two
seconds left in the game. He finished the day with a
game-high 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
All-Tournament team selection Cortez Ward scored 12 points and
pulled down six boards. Roshawn Knight also scored 12
points. Roy Stubbs was also an All-Tournament team member; he
finished with seven points and four rebounds before leaving the
game with an injury.
Whittier was led by All-Tournament teammates Vernon Covington and
Mike Archuletta. Covington finished with 13 points, six
rebounds and three assists. Archuletta scored 12 points in
the loss. Travis Crow had a team-high 14 points and pitched
in with five rebounds and three steals. Jeff McLean had a
game-high five steals for the Poets.
