Kourtney Zilbert '11 finished with her sixth double-double of
the season, but Whittier College lost 69-59 in overtime to
California Lutheran University on February 7. The loss drops
the Poets record to 9-11 overall and 4-5 in conference play.
Zilbert scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed a game-high 16
rebounds. She is averaging 11.4 points and 9.2 rebounds per
game this season. Rosario Rios-Aguilar '08 scored 13 points
and pulled down six boards. Marie Vodicska '11 made ten free
throws and finished with 12 points. She pitched in on defense
with four steals.
Cal Lutheran (9-10, 4-5) was led by Nita Sims with a game-high 17
points. She was perfect from the field, connecting on all
seven shots she took. Johanna Rothermel posted a
double-double with eleven points and ten rebounds. Tiffiny
Shim and Mary Placido scored 12 and 10 points,
respectively.
The Poets made just seven field goals in the first half and went
0-for-12 from beyond the arc. Cal Lutheran shot nearly 50% in
the first half on their way to a 25-18 lead at the break.
Whittier trailed by as many as ten in the second half, but came
back to force overtime thanks to 42.9% shooting in the second
frame.
The Poets shooting struggled again in the overtime period, going
just 2-for-13 from the floor. Cal Lutheran sealed the victory
at the free throw line, where they scored twelve of their 14
overtime points. They went 12-for-14 from the line in
overtime and 27-for-39 in the game.
The Poets continue SCIAC play on February 9, when they travel to
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and look to avenge a 59-56 overtime loss to
the Athenas on January 17. The game starts at 5:00 pm.
