Whittier College women's water polo played host for the first
time this season on March 19, when Wagner and Macalester Colleges
came to the Slade Aquatics Center for the Whittier
Mini-Tournament. The Poets then opened SCIAC play three days
later against Occidental College.
The Poets squared off with Wagner College in the opening game of
the Whittier Mini-Tournament. Wagner came away with the 10-5
win after opening a five-goal halftime lead they would not
relinquish. Caroline Galvin '08 scored three of the Poets'
five goals in the contest. Karley Perine '08 and Xenia
Castillo '11 rounded out the scoring with one goal
apiece.
The Poets bounced back with a 14-2 win over Macalester later that
evening. Galvin scored three more goals with Perine and
Catherine Gouge '08 also pitching in three goals. Amanda Owen
'10, Sara Wolff '11, Castillo, Indre Lauraitis '10 and Sarah Peel
'10 scored one goal apiece.
The Poets opened a 5-1 lead in the first quarter and never looked
back. Goalie Ashley Papenbrock '08 and the Poet defense
allowed just one goal in the remaining three quarters while the
offense continued to pepper the Macalester goal with shots.
In the SCIAC premiere, the Poets suffered a tough 9-4 loss to rival
Occidental College. Perine scored twice and Galvin and Nicole
Sandoval '08 each scored once. Papenbrock made six saves in
goal.
The Poets travel to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps as they continue SCIAC
play on March 26. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00pm.
