Whittier College women's water polo traveled to the University
of Redlands on March 29 as they continued play in the Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Poets
suffered their third straight loss in conference, falling 15-9 to
drop their record to 3-11 overall.
The teams played to a 3-3 tie in the first quarter. Redlands
started the scoring at the 5:45 mark, but Whittier's Xenia Castillo
'11 quickly tied the game with her first of three goals on the day
twenty seconds later. The Bulldogs then scored back-to-back
goals to take a 3-1 lead with three minutes left in the
first. Whittier responded with goals from Nicole Sandoval '08
and Karley Perine '08 in the final 1:30 of the quarter.
Redlands took control in the second quarter, out scoring the Poets
4-1. The lone Poet goal of the quarter came from
Castillo. The teams broke for halftime with Redlands up
7-4.
The Poets were down, but not out. They scored the first three
goals of the second half to tie the game. Perine, Caroline
Galvin '08 and Amanda Owen '11 each tallied goals in the third
quarter. Redlands regained the lead with just over a minute
left in the third, and heading into the final stanza, the score was
8-7.
In the first minute of the fourth, Redlands took a two-goal lead
with Galvin giving the Whittier response just 19 seconds
later. With the score 9-8, Redlands made their run.
They scored five unanswered goals, putting the game out of reach
for the Poets. Castillo would score one more with 2:00 left
in the game. Redlands scored one more less than a minute
later to make the final score 15-9.
On top of her three goals, Castillo added an assist and five drawn
penalties. Perine finished with two goals and two assists and
Galvin had two goals and one assist. Sandoval added a goal
and two assists. Veronica Becerra '11 was credited with two
assists and three steals. Ashley Papenbrock '08 made six
saves in goal.
The Poets are in action again on April 9, when they travel to the
University of La Verne for a 5:00pm match-up.
