Women's Water Polo on Three-Game Skid

Whittier College women's water polo traveled to the University of Redlands on March 29 as they continued play in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  The Poets suffered their third straight loss in conference, falling 15-9 to drop their record to 3-11 overall.

The teams played to a 3-3 tie in the first quarter.  Redlands started the scoring at the 5:45 mark, but Whittier's Xenia Castillo '11 quickly tied the game with her first of three goals on the day twenty seconds later.  The Bulldogs then scored back-to-back goals to take a 3-1 lead with three minutes left in the first.  Whittier responded with goals from Nicole Sandoval '08 and Karley Perine '08 in the final 1:30 of the quarter.

Redlands took control in the second quarter, out scoring the Poets 4-1.  The lone Poet goal of the quarter came from Castillo.  The teams broke for halftime with Redlands up 7-4.

The Poets were down, but not out.  They scored the first three goals of the second half to tie the game.  Perine, Caroline Galvin '08 and Amanda Owen '11 each tallied goals in the third quarter.  Redlands regained the lead with just over a minute left in the third, and heading into the final stanza, the score was 8-7.

In the first minute of the fourth, Redlands took a two-goal lead with Galvin giving the Whittier response just 19 seconds later.  With the score 9-8, Redlands made their run.  They scored five unanswered goals, putting the game out of reach for the Poets.  Castillo would score one more with 2:00 left in the game.  Redlands scored one more less than a minute later to make the final score 15-9.

On top of her three goals, Castillo added an assist and five drawn penalties.  Perine finished with two goals and two assists and Galvin had two goals and one assist.  Sandoval added a goal and two assists.  Veronica Becerra '11 was credited with two assists and three steals.  Ashley Papenbrock '08 made six saves in goal.

The Poets are in action again on April 9, when they travel to the University of La Verne for a 5:00pm match-up.
