WHITTIER, Calif. - The
Whittier College softball team suffered its fifth and sixth
consecutive defeat on Sunday afternoon as the Poets dropped a pair
of Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games to
the University of La Verne, 7-1 and 4-3, at Palmer Softball Field.
The Poets (4-6, 0-4 SCIAC) looked as if they were going to snap
their currently losing skid in the fourth inning of Game 2 after
Nicole Acevedo blasted a two-run homerun to put
the purple and gold up 3-2.
La Verne (5-4, 3-1 SCIAC) answered with two runs of its own in
the sixth inning as they held on for the one-run win.
Delaney Baylor tossed both games for the Leopards as she picked
up two wins. She finished the afternoon throwing 14.0 innings as
she scattered nine hits, allowed four runs and struck out eight.
Amanda Webster (2-5) started Game 1 for the
Poets as she went 7.0 innings, allowed nine hits, gave up seven
runs (two earned), struck out five and walked four. She came in
relief of Heather Dady in Game 2 and suffered loss
after pitching 4.0 innings.
Brenda Thompson collected two hits in Game 2
while Amanda Carrasco had one hit in each game.
The Poets return to action next Saturday, February 28, as they
host Occidental at Palmer Softball Field. The twin bill is
