WHITTIER, Calif. - The
Whittier College softball team lost its second and third straight
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games on
Saturday afternoon as it was swept by the University of Redlands,
7-1 and 6-5, at Palmer Field.
The Poets (13-11, 4-8 SCIAC) took an early lead in Game 1 of the
twin bill as Molly Yriarte singled in
Kellie Candia in the bottom of the first to put WC
ahead 1-0. WC led through two innings but Redlands tied the score
in its half of the third.
The purple and gold managed only one more in the first game as
it came from the bat of Dyan Acevedo.
The Bulldogs (10-5, 8-2) took its first lead of the game in the
fourth inning and tacked on five insurance runs in the seventh.
Amanda Webster went all seven innings for WC as
she allowed seven runs (four earned) on 11 hits.
The Poets hit the ball better in the second game as they totaled
nine hits. Whittier scored two runs in the bottom of the first and
score one run in each of the second, third and fourth innings.
Redlands was able to tie the game in the fifth inning with a
three-run effort and took the lead one inning later.
Brenda Thompson collected two hits and drove in
two runs for WC. Heather Dady got the start and
went 5.2 innings. She allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits
in the loss.
Nikole Gandara tossed the final inning and a
third.
The Poets return to action tomorrow, March 22, as they host
Pacific Lutheran at Noon.
