LA VERNE, Calif. - The Whittier College
softball team avoided the season sweep to the University of La
Verne on Sunday afternoon as it split its double-header with the
Leopards. The Poets dropped Game 1, 10-9, but rebounded to take the
second game in five innings, 11-3, at Wheeler Park.
The Poets (10-8, 3-5 SCIAC) totaled 26 hits in the two games and
combined to score 20 runs as they were led by the duo of
Colleen Mundy and Mary Pacheco
who each collected four hits in the two games.
In Game 1 the purple and gold trailed early as they surrendered
seven runs over the first four innings which includes three runs in
the first and the fourth inning. The Poets mounted a comeback but
it fell short. WC scored nine runs over the final three innings.
Nikole Gandara started the first game for the
Poets as she went 6.0 innings and allowed 14 hits in the loss.
Pacheco went 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Mundy,
Vicky Ovieda and Amanda Carrasco
all had two hits.
WC turned to Amanda Webster in the second game
as she went 5.0 innings, scattered six hits and allowed three runs.
Webster improved to 4-6 on the year.
The Poets jumped on the Leopards early as they scored five runs
in the first three innings. Whittier added six runs in the top half
of the fifth inning to seal the victory.
Mundy added two more hits and scored a pair of runs while
Pacheco went 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
WC returns to action on Thursday, March 12, as they play host to
Wheaton (Ill.) at 2 p.m. at Palmer Field.
