WHITTIER, Calif. - The
Whittier College women's water polo team snapped its eight-game
losing streak and picked up its first Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win on Saturday afternoon as it
defeated La Verne, 15-7, at the Lillian Slade Aquatics Center.
The Poets (7-15, 1-4 SCIAC) were led offensively by the duo of
Xenia Castillo and Melissa
Reynoso who each scored four goals. Indre
Lauraitis tallied three scores and Katrina
Thoreson and Veronica Becerra each had
two.
WC opened the game on a five-goal run as the first goal of the
game came just 28 seconds into the contest. The Poets allowed the
only first quarter La Verne goal with 19 seconds left. Whittier
held a 5-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
La Verne opened the second quarter with a quick goal but another
WC run gave the Poets some breathing room. Whittier tallied four
unanswered goals and went into halftime with a 10-3 lead.
The Poets were held scoreless in the third quarter but outscored
the Leopards 5-2 in the final quarter en route to the eight-goal
win.
Anahisa Aguirre made 20 saves which includes
six on man down situations. She also made two steals and had three
assists.
Castillo led the team with five assists and five steals.
The Poets return to action on Wednesday, April 15, as they host
Redlands at 5 p.m.
