WHITTIER, Calif.
- No. 5 Redlands scored two goals in the final two
minutes of the game as it held of the No. 9 Whittier College
women's water polo team on Wednesday evening, 14-12, at the Lillian
Slade Aquatics Center.
The Poets (7-16, 1-5 SCIAC) led 12-11 as the teams headed into
the fourth quarter but the outscored Whittier 3-0 in the final
frame. UR scored the go-ahead goal with 1:57 to play and added an
insurance goal just 40 seconds later to clinch the game.
Sarah Peel led the WC effort with five goals
and one assist. Indre Lauraitis added three goals
and dished out a team-high five assists.
The purple and gold led 4-3 at the end of the first quarter and
added four more goals in the second quarter to lead 8-6 after the
first 16 minutes. The high scoring third quarter saw Redlands score
five goals, which includes three straight from the 5:14 mark to
4:07, and the Poets tally three.
Xenia Castillo drew five ejections and scored
twice.
Goalie Anahisa Aguirre made 11 saves in the
loss.
The Poets conclude its regular-season on Saturday, April 18, as
they hit the rod to face Caltech.
