CLAREMONT, Calif. - Pomona-Pitzer hit a
three-pointer as time expired in regulation to send the game into
overtime and held off a last ditch effort by the Poets as the
Sagehens gave Whittier its second consecutive Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss, 75-73, on Wednesday
evening.
Whittier (6-6, 0-2 SCIAC) led by four points with 15 seconds to
play and saw its lead to cut to 66-63 with five seconds to
play as Adam Chaimowtiz connected on the second of his three foul
shots.
Pomona's Justin Sexton grabbed an offensive rebound on
Chaimowtiz's missed third foul shot and found David Liss who hit
the tying three as time expired.
The Poets took one lead in the extra time and tied the game at
72 with 43 seconds left but Drew Menez
couldn't find the bottom of the bucket for the tying score with two
seconds left. Menez finished with a game-high 33 points on 11-of-24
shooting.
Damon Perry added 14 points and pulled in 12
boards in the loss.
WC took its first lead of the game at the 12:35 mark of the
first half and led by as many eight points before it took a 32-26
lead into the intermission.
The Poets shot an even 40 percent from the field for the game
which includes a 48 percent effort in the first half. Pomona-Pitzer
shot 42 percent for the game.
Whittier was outrebounded 44-36 for the game.
The purple and gold returns to action on Saturday at 7:30 pm as
it plays host to La Verne.
