No. 7 Sagehens too strong for Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College women's tennis team suffered its second sweep in its last three matches on Saturday morning as No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer rolled to a 9-0 win over the purple and gold at the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts.

The Poets (2-3, 0-1) got down early on the top ranked team in the West Region and never recovered. The Saghens won all three doubles matches in convincing fashion and carried the momentum over to the singles side of the morning.

The No. 2 doubles team of Victoria Curtis and Maryrose Vigorita and the No. 3 team of Elizabeth Reitzell and Rachel Aelion-Moss managed only a single game in their matches. Both teams lost 8-1 while the No. 1 team went down 8-0.

Curtis battle hard in singles competition at the sixth spot but ultimately lost 6-4, 6-2. The four games she won in the first set were the most by any Poet all match.

Lauren Gelgur won three games in the second set of her match at No. 2 singles but lost 6-0, 6-3. Aelion-Moss, Vigorita and Kady Oliker all took two games in one of the sets during their matches.

The Poets return to action next Friday afternoon as they travel to Claremont, Calif., to take on the 11th ranked team in the region, Claremont-M-S.
