LA VERNE, Calif. – The Whittier College
women's water polo team scored a season-high 18 goals as it
rebounded from a near upset of Division I George Washington
University in its first game of the afternoon with a 12-goal win
over La Verne in a non-conference matchup.
The Poets (7-6) ended the first quarter tied at one with the
Leopards before it scored 12 goals over the next two frames to put
La Verne away.
WC outscored ULV 5-1 in the second quarter and put up a seven
spot in the third to lead 13-4 after three. The Poets added five
insurance goals in the last quarter en route to the win.
Arianna Weisenburger, Xenia
Castillo and Samantha McCord all scored a
team-high four goals while Katrina Thoreson
chipped in with three scores. Castillo added four assists to her
stat line while Melissa Reynoso equaled the
efforts by Castillo with four of her own assists.
In goal Anahisa Aguirre made nine stops but was
aided by a combined 13 steals between Thoreson (7) and Sara
Wolff (6).
In the first game of the afternoon the Poets played GWU to a 6-6
tie after three quarters but was held to just one score in the
final quarter. Whittier saw itself down 2-1 after one but managed
to even the score at 4-4 at the break.
Sarah Peel, Thoreson and Weisenburger all had
tow goals in the loss. Aguirre made nine saves and Castillo drew
three ejections.
Castillo and Aguirre also had three steals apiece.
The Poets will take part in the second Lancer Invite this
Saturday as they face Macalester and Fresno Pacific at 9 am and
1:30 pm, respectively. WC already owns a 9-8 win over FPU this
year.
