CLAREMONT, Calif. –
The Whittier College women's water polo team came back after
a 15-8 loss to No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer to cruise by Washington &
Jefferson, 15-4, on the first day of the Claremont Convergence
Tournament this afternoon at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.
The Poets
(9-8) led just 5-3 at the intermission of its game against the
Presidents but outscored W&J 7-1 in the third quarter en route
to the 11-goal win.
Melissa Reynoso scored a
game-high six goals in the win while Katrina
Thoreson added a hat trick.
The
defense was led by sophomore goalie Anahisa
Aguirre who made 10 saves. Xenia Castillo
and Reynoso each had four steals while Sarah Peel
had three.
WC had a
total of seven goal scorers and had nine players record at least
one assist. Arianna Weisenburger had a team-high
four assists.
In the
first game of the day the Poets got off to a rough start as they
were outscored 5-1 in the opening quarter against the Sagehens.
Whittier held scored seven goals to PP's five over the second
and third quarters and faced only a 10-8 deficit as the teams
headed into the final stanza.
However,
the Sagehens proved to be too strong as they held WC without a goal
and added five insurance scores in the win.
Weisenburger and
Veronica Becerra each scored three goals and Peel
and Thoreson both added a pair of assists. Aguirre made eight saves
while Castillo drew four ejections.
The Poets
will round out play at the Convergence against Redlands and Chapman
on Saturday afternoon. The first game is scheduled for a 9 am
start.
