CLAREMONT, Calif. –
Like it did on the first day of the Claremont Convergence
Tournament the Whittier College women's water polo team won
the second of its two games on the day to finish the day 1-1. The
Poets defeated Chapman, 14-3, after it fell in its first game to
Redlands, 8-6.
Katrina Thoreson scored
six goals against the Orange and added four assists in the win. The
game was never in doubt as a 4-1 first quarter lead turned into a
7-1 halftime lead.
Veronica Becerra added
four goals and two drawn ejections while Ariana
Weisenburger notched three goals with one drawn
ejection.
Xenia Castillo drew two
ejections and had three steals along with Melissa
Reynoso. Anahisa Aguirre made 11 saves in
the win.
Whittier
added seven second half goals in the win.
In the
first game of the day against Redlands, WC got down 3-1 after one
quarter and trailed 5-3 at the intermission. The two teams each
scored three second half goals.
Becerra
scored four goals while Thoreson and Sarah Peel
each had one score.
Aguirre
had 12 saves in the loss which includes a blocked penalty shot in
the opening quarter.
Castillo
drew five ejections.
Whittier
returns to action next Wednesday as it opens SCIAC play against
Occidental at 5 pm.
