Redlands stops Whittier in conference tilt

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Whittier College women's water polo team scored five goals in the final quarter but it wasn't enough as the University of Redlands held off a late charge by the Poets to earn the 14-10 win on Wednesday evening.

The Poets (12-14, 1-3 SCIAC) were led offensively by Melissa Reynoso who notched a team-high three goals. Katrina Thoreson dished out four assists to go along with her one goal.

Redlands took a 5-2 lead into the second quarter and held the purple and gold without a score in the second stanza en route to a six-goal, 8-2, halftime lead. The Bulldogs extended its lead to 12-5 after three quarters of play and were able to hold off the 5-2 fourth quarter in favor of the Poets.

Veronica Becerra and Samantha McCord each scored two goals while Sarah Peel and Xenia Castillo each added one goal. Castillo drew two ejections and had three steals for Whittier.

The Poets will return to action on Saturday, April 17, as they travel to La Verne to face the Leopards at 11 am.
