La VERNE, Calif. – Sophomore
Melissa Reynoso scored a four goals and
Sarah Peel made 10 saves in her debut between the
pipes as the Whittier College women's water polo team racked
up a 14-6 win over La Verne on Saturday morning.
The Poets (13-14, 2-3 SCIAC) were without starting goalie
Anahisa Aguirre but turned to Peel who led the
defensive effort. Arianna Weisenburger and
Veronica Becerra each had three steals in the win.
As strong as the defense was, the offense was equally as
impressive. Reynoso's four goals was just the start. A total
of seven different Poets registered a goal as Sara
Wolff and Becerra chipped in with a pair of goals.
Sophomore Katrina Thoreson had a hat trick in
the win.
The Poets jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one quarter and took a
5-3 advantage into the intermission. Whittier added four goals in
the third and five in the fourth quarters en route to the
eight-goal win.
Becerra drew four ejections and Reynoso dished out three assists
to add to their stat lines.
The Poets return to action on Wednesday, April 21, as they host
Pomona-Pitzer in the final collegiate water polo game played at the
Lillian Slade Aquatics Center. The pool is set for a facelift which
is scheduled to start this summer.
